Mirena Lawyers

If you are a woman who is considering using Mirena or another IUD (intrauterine device) as a form of worry-free birth control, you should review and understand all of the potential side effects that you could face before having the device inserted.

Are you in need of speaking to a Mirena lawyer? Here at the Lamber Goodnow law team, we have dedicated our careers to helping consumers protect themselves from the negligence of others, including doctors and pharmaceutical companies. In partnership with co-counsel firms, we’re dedicated to making sure that consumers like you have the information they need to make good decisions.

The Mirena Device

Mirena is an IUD that is inserted into a woman’s uterus by her doctor. Mirena works by releasing the hormone levonorgestrel into your body. This hormone makes it more difficult for sperm to reach (and fertilize) an egg, and more difficult for the egg to attach itself and develop into a fetus.

Once in place, it has a lifespan of approximately five years. This means that, in theory, birth control can be achieved in a manner that doesn’t require daily pills or other care.

Of course, as with other drugs and medical treatment, Mirena can cause some women to experience one or more of a spectrum of side effects. If you are considering Mirena, keep in mind that it is only intended for use in women who have already had a child.

Side Effects from Mirena

Mirena has the potential to cause a number of side effects. Most of them have to do with the menstrual cycle and related complications. Like most drugs, the hormone in Mirena can cause side effects that are minor or major.

The minor side effects can be inconvenient. They are not usually dangerous, and frequently will begin to diminish in severity and frequency as time passes and your body begins to adjust to the hormone. Minor side effects of Mirena can include:

  • Tiredness or weakness
  • Lethargy or listlessness
  • Abdominal or stomach pain
  • Breast pain (or tenderness in the breast tissue)
  • Dizziness, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting
  • Headache

If you experience any of these side effects, talk to your doctor about it immediately.

The major side effects of Mirena can pose a serious risk to your health. If you are experiencing a side effect that you would classify as major, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible. The major side effects of Mirena include:

  • Abnormal menstrual bleeding—either lighter or heavier than usual
  • Irregular periods or periods that you miss completely
  • Cramping or pain in the pelvis or abdominal area
  • Menstrual bleeding that ceases prematurely or sporadic menstrual bleeding

These are just some of the side effects that are possible with Mirena. This website is a resource to view them more thoroughly.

When Shouldn’t You Take Mirena?

There are some factors that may or should prevent you from using Mirena. If you are pregnant—or if you could be pregnant—you should alert your doctor to this information. Mirena is not intended for use by pregnant women. Also, a number of medications may have unintended reactions with Mirena.

Also be sure to go over all medications and supplements you’re currently taking with your doctor. He or she needs to research the other medication and be sure that it will not create issues when you use Mirena.
