What is Pradaxa?
Pradaxa is an anticoagulant that decreases the blood’s ability to form clots. Pradaxa is sometimes prescribed to those who have suffered from clot-related incidents such as stroke, embolism or clots in your extremities (deep vein thrombosis). It is also at times used to treat other medical conditions, such as atrial fibrillation.
Side Effects of Pradaxa
All medications have side effects, but the list of possible side effects from Pradaxa is lengthy. To learn detailed information about Pradaxa, its side effects, and other factors about the drug, view this web page, as well as any other sources your doctor might recommend, for more information.
Pradaxa can cause side effects that are relatively minor and of little serious danger to your health. Unfortunately, it can also cause some serious side effects that could permanently injure you if left untreated. If you experience serious side effects, or symptoms that you are not comfortable with, contact your doctor immediately.
The minor side effects of Pradaxa include, but are not limited to:
- Indigestion or “sour” stomach
- Upset stomach, pain in the abdomen, heartburn, nausea and diarrhea
- A rash or itchy patch on the skin
- Minor bleeding (for example, a nosebleed or bleeding from small cuts and scratches)
The major side effects of Pradaxa are much more serious. Note that in the case of some side effects, such as an upset stomach, the only difference between a minor and a major side effect is a matter of the severity of the issue.
Some major side effects of Pradaxa are:
- Upset stomach, nausea, vomiting (especially if you are vomiting material that resembles coffee grounds), heartburn, belching and pain or discomfort in your throat
- Discomfort, pain, or a burning sensation in your abdominal area
- Black or tarry stools, bloody stools, diarrhea or constipation
- Issues with irregular breathing, dizziness or vertigo, loss of consciousness, or difficulty breathing
- Rashes, itchy spots or hives on your skin
- A heartbeat that is too fast or seems irregular
- Unexplained weakness, tiredness or malaise
Contraindications for Pradaxa
As with any drug, there are some conditions or circumstances that may preclude you from using Pradaxa. That is called a contraindication. For Pradaxa, the list of contraindications is extremely lengthy. Review this article and other sources to be sure you are comfortable with taking Pradaxa.
If you are taking any other medications, even over-the-counter supplements, be sure to notify your doctor before you begin taking Pradaxa. He or she needs to review the other medications and be sure they will not react with Pradaxa.
