Composition and Use of Talcum Powder
Talcum powder is a compound containing talc; talc, in turn, is simply magnesium silicate. Talc has long been recognized for its absorbent and anti-friction properties, making it a popular choice for using in areas of the body that may experience excessive rubbing and/or sweating. The talc component in talcum powder prevents the powder from caking together; for this reason, it is also frequently used in cosmetic products.
In its natural form, talc frequently contains asbestos, which, in turn, has long been recognized as a carcinogen, particularly when it is inhaled. Today’s talcum powder manufacturers do not use talc that contains asbestos in their products. Even so, there have been a number of studies that suggest the existence of a link between talcum powder and the development of certain forms of cancer.
Cancer and Talcum Powder
Although it is not yet fully understood how talcum powder might interact with the body to promote the development of cancer, the data suggests a clear link between using talcum powder over a long period of time and the emergence of cancer in the user. In fact, some consumers who have been harmed through their use of talcum powder have successfully sued manufacturers for their injuries.
One type of cancer that is linked to talc is lung cancer; however, this type of talc is the kind that contains asbestos, and asbestos-containing talc is not used in cosmetic products. In fact, there has been no link established between cosmetic talcum powder and lung cancer.
In addition, cancers of the female reproductive organs are associated with talcum powder. Examples are uterine cancer, ovarian cancer or other forms of cancer in the female reproductive tract.
It is worth noting that the talcum powder used by these women was the kind used in cosmetic products—meaning that it did not contain asbestos. In spite of the absence of asbestos, these women developed cancer.
While the specific connection between talcum powder and these cancers has not been shown, one theory is that the particles of talc cause the woman’s reproductive parts to become inflamed. Chronic inflammation, as many doctors know, has been linked to the development of cancer—even if the element causing the inflammation is not, in itself, carcinogenic.
Regardless of the mechanism behind the development of the cancer, the studies have suggested that there is a link between the use of talcum powder and the development of these types of cancer in some women.
If you have frequently used talcum powder or products containing talc, you might want to talk to your doctor about your health. Additionally you may conduct research on websites such as www.cancer.org, which has extensive information on cancer, treatment and statistics.
